What is a coded (programmable) magnet?
A coded magnet has many tiny magnetic regions — maxels, or magnetic pixels — printed across its face in a designed pattern. That pattern decides how the magnet behaves: where it grips, where it releases and how it aligns. It's the programmable-magnet technology pioneered as Polymagnet by Correlated Magnetics Research.
How is a Polymagnet different from an ordinary magnet?
An ordinary magnet just attracts or repels. A coded magnet can do specific, designed jobs — snap to precise alignment, latch on contact, spring at a distance, hold at set angles, or click through detents — because its pole pattern is engineered, not uniform.
What behaviors can coded magnets do?
The main behaviors are align (parts self-center), latch (grip firmly on contact), spring (push back over a distance), hold (strong steady grip) and detent (click into set rotational positions). Many products combine two, like spring-then-latch.
Which product should I start with?

Do I need any tools to use them?
Demos pair with a brass constraining rod so you feel each behavior exactly as designed, and a zinc-coated steel plate gives you a clean surface to test hold and release. Both are in the Tools & Accessories section.
